Treatment
Your initial consultation will be longer than that of follow up sessions. During the consultation Sarah will assess your general state of health and well-being by asking questions about your symptoms, previous medical history, diet, lifestyle, sleeping patterns, digestion and emotional state. Once enough information has been assembled she can make a diagnosis.
Sarah will then take your pulse to feel its quality and rate, and also take a quick look at your tongue to see its colour and coating. Both techniques give her an insight into what is happening inside your body. This will also help her to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment for you.
What Acupuncture Feels Like
Acupuncture needles are solid and very fine; they bear little similarity to the hollow needles used for injections and blood tests. People often describe a dull ache or tingling sensation when a needle is inserted. Needles are usually left in place for 20 minutes, but may also be inserted and removed immediately. During treatment people often feel heaviness of the limbs and are pleasantly relaxed.
Before Treatment
- Avoid eating heavy meals at least one hour before treament
- Avoid alcohol consumption
- Avoid food and drink which affect the colour of your tongue
- Avoid brushing your tongue with toothbrush
After Treatment
It is common for people to feel a sense of calm and relaxation after treatment. Some particularly strong treatments may leave you feeling a bit drowsy for a few hours, in which case it is advised to plan ahead if you are to be driving afterwards. You are welcome to sit and relax in the comfortable reception area for as long as necessary after treatment.
